Mark 2:23-3:12
Jesus Is The Law
  1. Couple of things to note that some non-christians may try to bring against these verses and Jesus.
    1. v.23 Jesus and his disciples did not steal grain.
      1. Deut. 23:24-25 says, “24 “If you go into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat your fill of grapes, as many as you wish, but you shall not put any in your bag. 25 If you go into your neighbor's standing grain, you may pluck the ears with your hand, but you shall not put a sickle to your neighbor's standing grain.”
    2. v.25 says that David entered the House of God in the time of Abiathar the high priest.
      1. 1 Samuel 21 says that David spoke with then priest Ahimelech and he gave David bread.
      2. This is not contradicting however, because we learn in 1 Samuel 22 that King Saul slaughtered 85 priests, which included Ahimelech, the father of Abiathar.
      3. Abiathar survived the slaughter and informed David of what King Saul had done.

***Jesus Doesn’t follow the law: Jesus makes the Law!***

  1. v.25 Concerning the Sabbath:
      1. Work was not permitted on the Sabbath.
        1. Exodus 34:21 says, “21 “Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest. In plowing time and in harvest you shall rest.”
        2. The Pharisees attempted to enforce their own stipulations much like they did with fasting.
          1. The pharisees and priests fasted twice a week and expected other to do so as well when scripture doesn’t even say to do it once.
        3. David (before he was king) received and ate along with his men the bread of the Presence.
          1. 1 Samuel 21:3-6 “Now then, what do you have on hand? Give me five loaves of bread, or whatever is here.” 4 And the priest answered David, “I have no common bread on hand, but there is holy bread—if the young men have kept themselves from women.” 5 And David answered the priest, “Truly women have been kept from us as always when I go on an expedition. The vessels of the young men are holy even when it is an ordinary journey. How much more today will their vessels be holy?” 6 So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence, which is removed from before the Lord, to be replaced by hot bread on the day it is taken away.”
          2. David did what the Pharisees would think to be unlawful, sinful, and against God.
          3. God blessed David however, David defeated Saul and then became King David.

***Jesus doesn’t follow the Law…Jesus is the Law!***

  1. Jesus corrects the Pharisees.
    1. v.27 “And he said to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. 28 So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
      1. Jesus establishes what the Sabbath is intended for.
        1. The Sabbath is a day of rest for the renewal of spiritual and physical strength.
        2. Genesis 2:1-3 is where we get the Sabbath from.
          1. God created the Earth and everything and everyone in it in six days.
          2. The seventh day God made Holy and He rested.
    2. Jesus makes a bold statement:
      1. v.28 “So the Son of Man is lord even of the Sabbath.”
        1. Jesus is the Son of Man which makes Him Lord over the Sabbath.
        2. Jesus is fully man, and fully God.
          1. So Jesus created the Sabbath for man to rest and rejuvenate.
          2. Jesus has the right to do what He wants with the Sabbath…it’s His!

***Jesus doesn’t follow the Law…Jesus fulfilled the Law!***

  1. Jesus healed a man’s withered hand and cast our demons:
    1. v3:1 The Pharisees knew the man with the withered hand was there.
      1. They waited to see what Jesus would do. They wanted to accuse Jesus.
        1. Jesus knew what they were thinking…just the same as He did when He healed the paralyzed man.
      2. v3:9 Jesus had the disciples secure a boat because the people were going to crush him there were so many.
        1. Jesus fulfilled everything that the OT foretold about Him.
          1. Isaiah 35:5-6 says, “Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.”
          2. Christ will come from the line of David:
            1. 1 Samuel 7:12-16
            2. Isaiah 11:1
            3. Jeremiah 23:5-6
          3. We have proof that Jesus does found in the genealogy of Matthew and Luke.
  2. “You are the Son of God”
    1. Even the demons knew who Jesus was. Satan knows who Jesus is.
      1. It was foretold in the book of Genesis…at the very beginning…that Jesus was triumph over Satan.
        1. Genesis 3:15 “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.”
      2. It was foretold in the the book of Revelation…at the end…that Jesus would triumph over Satan.
        1. Revelation 20:10 “10 and the devil who had deceived them was thrown into the lake of fire and sulfur where the beast and the false prophet were, and they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.”
      3. The best news is that Jesus fulfilled the Law, kept His promise, and Saved US!
        1. Isaiah 53:5 “But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.”
