John 16:1-15

John 16:1-15

  • Jesus is preparing us for what is to come so that we will remain faithful.
    • We need to know what to expect so that we can and will remain steadfast in the faith.
      • James 1:1 says, “2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, 3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.”
      • James 1:12 says “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
  • Jesus tells us what to expect so that we won’t fall away (or lose our way).
  • Jesus explains that it is for our advantage. Why?
  • We need the Helper (The Holy Spirit John 15:26)
  • v. 8 The Holy Spirit “will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgement”
    • Jesus had a very specific task to do. What was that task? We are told in John 3:16:
      • John 3:16-17 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.”
    • The Holy Spirit has a very specific tasks as well:
      • v. 8 “he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment”
  • Notice v.11: “the ruler of this world is judged.”
    • The ruler of this world is Satan:
      • who has been judged
      • who has been found guilty
      • who has been convicted
      • who has been defeated
